It would be good if there was a way to repair the stick without reformatting and flashing it again since I might have installed a lot of software to it and configured it. It seems the stick gets destroyed for UEFI booting if you once boot it using MBR.

I needed to do the formatting of the USB drive as in this video on the Mac (OS X Extended (Journaled), GUID Partition Map), because a USB stick that worked to boot an old PC (Eee PC 1001HA) with RPD that didn't have UEFI, but only MBR booting, didn't work on this MacBook Pro 5,4 from mid 2009 (the USB stick formatted with SD Memory Card Formatter 5.0.1 on Windows XP on EeePC doesn't show up when booting and pressing alt/option).
